6. Fertiliser & Soil Conditioners
Seasonal Fertilising
-
Each year in early spring, we recommend applying a 12-14 month slow-release fertiliser around the drip line (the outer circumference of the tree’s canopy). – Contact us for information on which fertiliser to use for your specific trees.
-
Avoid over-fertilising, especially with high-nitrogen products, as this can lead to weak, spindly growth susceptible to wind damage.
Which Fertiliser do i use?
-
Australian Natives - Remember to use low-phosphorus fertilisers designed for Australian plants with a low phosphorus tolerance.
-
Exotic and non-native trees and plants - a balanced N-P-K slow-release fertiliser is typically appropriate. Incorporate it gently into the topsoil around (but not against) the root ball at planting time.
Soil Conditioners
-
Seasol is a fantastic tonic to use during planting or at times of shock. It will also help your tree cope with extream weather events.
-
Compost, Well-Rotted Manure or Permafert: Adds organic matter, improves structure, and encourages beneficial soil microbes. Do not apply fresh manure of any type. Manure should be aged/rotted down for at least 12 months prior to use next to your trees/
-
Gypsum (for Clay Soils): Helps break down heavy clay to improve drainage.
