4. Staking & Securing

Why stake your trees?
-
In Ballarat’s often windy conditions, newly planted trees benefit from extra support until roots establish, especially if the trunk is slender or top-heavy.
How to Stake
-
All of our advanced trees include a bamboo stake - Leave this on! This is connected to the trunk with rubbers which will expand as the tree grows. The Bamboo is there to support the trunk and distribute the force of your outside hardwood stakes in the wind.
-
Use two or three 1.5m long hardwood stakes, placed outside the root ball to avoid damaging the roots and driven into the ground 600mm
-
Secure the trunk and bamboo with Jute Tree Tie ( available in our store ), allowing slight movement to encourage root anchorage. You can put a screw through the jute tie and into the stake to stop it falling down the stake.
-
Check ties regularly; loosen them as the trunk thickens to encourage root growth.
When to Remove Stakes
Typically, you can remove stakes after 12–24 months, once the root system is established enough to support the tree against winds. In exposed, windy locations, stakes may need to stay on for longer.
